Last CSA pick-up

Ever since May, we’ve been part of the Turtle Farm  http://www.turtle-farm.com/TheFarmStand.htm CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). We split a “share” with our neighbors, Tom and Cathy, and have been taking turns picking up our shared goodies on Tuesday evenings at Angela’s house in Johnston.  It’s been fun to share surprises-”What’s gonna be in our box this time????” and then to cook accordingly. The taste of organic veggies has been very tantalizing! We’ve learned a few things about seasonal cooking, and have tried numerous new recipes. Very fun, and a whole new way of thinking about recipes, menu-planning and cooking.

However, we’re nearing the end of this adventure. Next week is the last of our Tuesday pick-ups, and we’ll need to turn in “our box”. We’re kinda sad about this, as it’s been so much fun and such a learning experience. Angela Tedesco (owner of Turtle Farm) and her helpers always include a very informative newletter with each box pick-up. We’ve learned so much about various ways to grow healthy vegetables, and have a whole new appreciation for organic farming.

Our neighbors, Cathy and Tom did not want to try two of the items that came in our box this past week. They did, however, take ALL of the beets that came, because we do NOT enjoy beets and they do. Here’s a picture of me with the two items that we now have all to ourselves.  Hmmm……what exactly are they???

We will send $1.00 to first person that guesses BOTH items correctly in the same guess:) !!!!! By the way, we just enjoyed a stir-fry supper that was anchored by at least one of these strange looking items:) Mmmmmmm/………….

  1. well, brusselsprouts on the left and is it bok choi on the right?

  2. That’s what I was going to guess. The first is brussel sprouts – love them! That 2nd one looks like some sort of Chinese cabbage. We have a great beet recipe. Often I don’t like beets because of how they are cooked but cooked with tomatoes, onions and cumin seeds and stewed for a bit and served on couscous – very delicious!

  3. I was going to say brussel sprouts and Bok Choy.. Except I spelled mine correctly.. So therefore I get 1.00.. :) we eat Bok Choy all the time…

  4. Kim, how about I take you out for coffee next time we’re in GR? That’ll be even more than $1.00:)

  5. I like Kim’s response.

  6. Yeah, Kim! We grow both those things in the garden as they are sooooo much sweeter than from the store.

But I was looking for news from Reuben and Heidi – no news yet?
