Excitement in Johnston

Yesterday was a big day in Johnston, IA. The final pre-caucus democratic presidential debates were held yesterday afternoon at Iowa Public Television, just a few blocks from our house (the day before, Republicans had their final pre-caucus debates at IPT as well) . The signs and crowds and noise surrounding this democratic event (I am partial) were amazing. Reporters were walking up and down Pioneer Parkway. Police cars were all over. Cars were parked all around the Winwood Loop, which spooked Boston on her noon-hour walk ( I worked yesterday at PR, but came home for lunch to walk Boston). Obama, Clinton, Edwards, Richardson, Dodd, and Biden were all present at this event. It was fun to watch CNN coverage later in the evening. Johnston was on the national news! Later last night, I attended my precinct house party, which was on North Winwood, just a half-mile walk from our house (.6 to be exact, because this loop is part of my interval training route). The numbers at this precinct party were modest, but it was great to meet the people that I will likely be caucusing with on January 3rd, and to learn more about Barack Obama, who is my choice candidate. There were 928 such precinct house parties happening all across Iowa at the same time last night. 1710 precincts were involved (some had combined house parties). The precinct parties coordinated a conference call with Obama at 7:20 last night, which was really cool. He fielded 3-4 questions from people that were at some of these parties. Oprah Winfrey was in DSM earlier this week, and endorsed Obama, which was really cool. I wasn’t able to make this meeting, but some of my friends were. Looks like Obama is taking the lead. I’ll bet he’ll get Iowa, the first state to rank the political candidates. You see, this is a really cool state after all:) We start the process here in Iowa. Basically, we get to pick the president:)

thats really interesting to hear about your internal perspective. I am really bad at following/understanding political stuff. This encourages me to research/pay more attention to the details of the campaign path. Maybe Nick and I should move to Iowa after all :)
